For the purpose of granting greater safety and efficacy in cancer treatment, the Radiotherapy Service at Clínica Alemana incorporated a new linear accelerator, the most modern piece of equipment of its type in Latin America.
This complex technology is designed for the performance of image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), making possible more accurate definition of the zone affected by the tumor, and in this way, concentrating radiation in that area and reducing the risk of damage to the healthy surrounding tissue.

The Elekta Synergy, Dual Electron Linear Accelerator started operating at Clínica Alemana on December 2008. Dr. Andrés Córdova, Head of the Radiotherapy Service of the Oncology Department at Clínica Alemana explains that this modern equipment allows positioning of the tumoral zone to be irradiated, with a minimal margin of error (less than 3 mm) so as to minimize the amount of compromised healthy tissue.
This is especially relevant when working with very high doses of radiation and very small tumors or tumors near critical organs, such as the prostate or those of the head and neck or those near the bone marrow.
