Clínica Alemana and Heidelberg University's Thoraxklinik
Agree to promote Interventional Pulmonology in Latin America
The objective is to further cooperation in scientific/academic matters and create a Latin American training center for specialists in this area, which is almost inexistent in the region.

With the purpose of promoting interventional pulmonology in Latin America, Clínica Alemana entered into an agreement with Heidelberg University's Thoraxklinik. The latter is considered the European reference point for the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory tract diseases.

The agreement, which envisages academic cooperation between the two institutions, was signed on November 5th of this year by Clinica Alemana Director Dr. Claus Krebs, its General Manager Marcelo Magofke and the Chief of the Pulmonology and Critical Patient Unit of the Thoraxklinik, Dr. Felix Herth.

Dr. Krebs explained that this agreement will enable the best diagnosis and treatment of lung/bronchial diseases, as well as the implementation of highly sophisticated procedures, which are currently non-existent in Chile.

Interventional Pulmonology Service
Clinica Alemana's Interventional Pulmonology Service was created in April of this year, under the direction of Dr. Sebastian Fernandez-Bussy, a specialist in Intensive Care and Pulmonology who has trained at world-class medical schools, such as the Harvard Medical School and the University of Heidelberg in Germany.

The unit has pioneered the use of highly sophisticated, minimally invasive procedures in Chile. These methods are designed to detect and determine the stage of development of lung cancer. Now the unit will also become a training center in this sub-specialty, not only for Chileans, but also for doctors from other countries.

Dr. Krebs adds that "this will help us to position ourselves as the reference point for highly complex pathologies, in addition to allowing us to tackle academic and research projects in cooperation with one of the most important respiratory tract centers in the world."

Dr. Herth explained that this is the first time that the Thoraxklinik has entered into an agreement with a Latin American medical center. Therefore, it is a landmark agreement that will help to develop interventional pulmonology in the region by implementing techniques that are currently not available in Latin America.

In May of this year, Clínica Alemana also signed another agreement with the Interventional Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery Center of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center the training center of the Harvard Medical School, Dr. Sebastian Fernández Bussy, head of the Interventional Pulmonology Service at Clínica Alemana, says he has promoted these initiatives because he believes that the agreements will close the Harvard-Heidelberg-Santiago triangle.
