Clinica Alemana has added a new Air and Land Rescue Service to its portfolio of services. Now, medical support can be provided to anyone who has an accident or whose life is at risk in an location far from the hospital.
A modern helicopter and seven ambulances, in addition to a specially trained team of doctors and nurses with expertise in rescue operations, are now available 24 hours a day, every day.
The chief of Clínica Alemana's Emergency Department, Dr. Gustavo Hein, explained that, according to international studies in this specialty, the sequels deriving from accidents in high-speed highways are dramatically decreased if hospital rescue service is provided within the first hour after the accident.
According to Dr. Hein, "Fast population growth, burgeoning urban development and high-speed roads have led to a sharp increase in the number of accidents. For example, accidents and trauma are the main cause of death for people 1 to 40 years of age. Therefore, the demand for on-the-spot, immediate medical care in the case of critically-injured patients has surged."

Cutting-edge air rescue technology
A specially equipped helicopter is available for air rescue operations within a radius of 300 Km from Clinica Alemana. Its special features include two rotors for greater patient safety and a spacious cabin, where medical care can be adequately provided to the patient. Also, in special cases, a family member can fly along with the patient, something that could be of great importance to the parents of a critically-injured/ill child.
In addition, a new helipad, from which the helicopter can fly its rescue missions, has been operating since mid-March on the seventh floor of Clinica Alemanas inpatient building. The helicopter will be able to bring patients to the hospital from the mountains and the central coastal area. For example, the flight from the hospital to neighboring ski resorts takes approximately 15 minutes and 40 minutes to seaside towns such as Zapallar and Papudo.
