PET – CT: Clínica Alemana's new high-tech imaging tool for cancer studies
This state-of-the-art scanner –the most modern of its type in South America- provides a detailed picture of the whole body and allows physicians to pinpoint the location of malignant tumors before making treatment recommendations.

Clínica Alemana has just acquired one of the most sophisticated imaging tools used in cancer studies, the Biograph mCT Pet-CT with 64 slices. The PET/CT scan combines the strengths of two well-established imaging modalities -positron emission tomography (PET) and computerized tomography (CT)- into a single scan. The highly sensitive PET scan images the biology of disorders at the molecular level, while the CT scan provides a detailed picture of the body's internal anatomy. Alone, each imaging test has particular benefits and limitations but by combining these two state-of the-art technologies, physicians can more accurately diagnose, localize and monitor cancer.

Clínica Alemana radiologist Dr. Guillermo Chong has specialized in this technique at Washington University's Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology. He explains that this method is able to detect over 90% of all lesions, that is, many more than those detected by any other imaging technique.

Since the scan shows the entire body, it is indicated for most kinds of tumors (e.g. breast, lung and lymph tumors, among others). It also detects tumors in the face and head, with the exception of the brain, where there is high metabolic activity.

However, it must be highlighted that the majority of PET/CT scans are performed for oncologic applications. A PET/CT scan can show the extent of disease. For patients whose cancer is newly diagnosed, it is important to determine if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body so that appropriate treatment can be started. It also plays an important role after treatment is complete, allowing physicians to investigate suspected recurrence of cancer.

Procedure
The PET/CT scan performed at Clinica Alemana's Scanner Service begins with the injection of a glucose-based product, which is marked with the Fluor-18 isotope and travels through the body. There is an hour-long wait until the product has collected in the organs and tissues targeted for examination.
